Tolerance versus embracing: entrance slip
My field of study is physics. I feel welcomed into the field because we use proof, logic, and evidence, which is exactly why I chose this field. It is very comforting to know that a claim is often backed by evidences that can be replicated everywhere. However, a person with an alternative ways of understanding the world (i.e. those who believe in “credibility origins from social status”) may not feel comfortable with our ways of thinking. I believe growth comes from the ashes of frustration. Letting the students understand our ways of thinking and allowing them to face the inconvenient truth is my goal.
Jeff thinks it's ok to make mistakes; allow the students to have imagination. This idea is still compatible with my idea. The students cannot believe me just because I’m the physics teacher. This is exactly the idea I want to debunk. I would present them with evidence and interesting ideas. Ultimately, it’s up to the students to decide whether they want to accept the ideas or not.
