School gardens: Exit Slip
We had so much fun in the garden today! Coming from a farmer family, friends said I looked like a farmer wearing the hat. As adults, the garden offered us a chance to slow down and relax. I also enjoyed fresh garden vegetable. However, Stephanie pointed out that teenagers may not be so interested in gardening. I believe that instead of making the garden as a required component, a gardening club in high school is a better choice. I also like the idea of eating what you grew, and perhaps we can serve the harvest in school cafeteria, similar to what's being done at the Sprout Cafe. The whole idea of gardening can be integrated with lower level science and home economics curriculum.
Thanks Albert! Just wondering though -- what makes you think that teenagers might not be interested in the garden (or that more students might not be interested in the garden than, say, in physics, or French, or any of the things we teach in school)? There's gardening, but there's also learning about every subject in the curriculum in and with a he garden...
