Ideas on Flipped Classrooms (exit slip)
Flipped classrooms is an awesome idea, but I don't believe the classroom should be "completely flipped". Everyone thinks differently; we cannot expect a lecture would work like a one-size-fit-all sock. Students will be able to use these short videos to study at their own pace and at their own space. This brings us to another question: are in-class meetings necessary if the videos are available? I believe the answer is yes. We have explored the idea of "social brain" in another course, where it described the idea that the students works best under collaborative environment. While the video may provide a good way to explain the concept, the same saying about "one-size-fit-all sock" can be said to it. Not only do we need a teacher to help students break through those bottleneck concepts, we also need to provide a friendly environment for the collaborative learning style. Flipped classroom should be used in conjunction with traditional types of teaching. We could have days of flipped classroom learning followed by days of short lectures and community learning. Flipped classrooms also require the availability of computing resources. Schools should try to implement the idea only if all students have access to such learning styles, otherwise gaps could appear between students with and without the resources. Flipped classroom would not eliminate the existence of teachers and classrooms, but rather provide a powerful, alternative tool to the traditional learning styles.
