Exit Slip: Praise, blame, and mindset

We have just learned about the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, as well as the use of verbal praises and prizes in another class (EPSE 308). The use of verbal praises is a double-edged sword. We learned that having too much prizes for students who produces desired outcome will eventually decrease their intrinsic motivation, while verbal praises will increase their intrinsic motivation. However, giving too much praises could backfire, as supported by Alfie Kohn's video on the bad effect of too much praises on kids we watched today. I often find myself running for the approval of the others, possibly because I have received too much verbal praises as a kid. As educators, I will try to use both verbal and written praises, and not limit the praises to small amount of students. I will create a learning atmosphere that fosters growth and self-comparison.
